“Transporting Qi”『
Art Project by CeCiLia Ho
The Journey A happening between 13 March – 23 March, 2010 From the heart of Victoria Harbor, Qi was collected by people blowing into hundreds of balloons and was transported 2,000km to the rural Yunnan, passing through Hong Kong (ex-colonial city), 前殖民地香港, Zhenjiang (Industrial) 工業城市湛江, Baise (minority) 小數民族鄉鎮百色, Luoping (agricultural) 農村羅平and Jianshui (ancient city) 古都建水. Along this voyage, the artist provokes people with (the contained) Qi, that turns into a subject of occasion, conversation, participation, collection and at times illusion. Arriving the gigantic rice terraces of Yuanyang雲南省元陽梯田, children villagers received the Qi and made performance of its release. Qi – a new geography Transporting Qi denotes the circulating of formless strength in a body. Here the individuals donate their Qi to give it form and trigger the circulation. The travel of Qi from Hong Kong to China raises questions between the edge and centre, outside and inside, citizens and villagers, giving and taking. We look for a critique on the possibilities of art in China – by understanding its beauty, language, people, traditions, space, speed and climate.
